Description
Located at Quinta da Boavista in the very centre of Maia, the Fundação Gramaxo has belonged to the Gramaxo family since the 17th century and preserves the rural past by maintaining the various original buildings — the Manor House (private), the Threshing Floor and Threshing House, the Caretaker’s House, the Cowshed, the Coach House (Barracão) and the Bandstand. The property’s extensive grounds have survived the pressure of property development and bear the memory of the former agricultural fields.
With the aim of opening this special place to the community, particularly the people of Maiá, and of promoting the arts and culture, the Gramaxo Foundation was established in 2013. The idea for the construction of a museum, designed by the architect Álvaro Siza, took shape and was completed in 2021. The museum houses parts of the Maria de Fátima Gramaxo Collection and also features a network of spaces hosting temporary exhibitions and an auditorium.
